ETS, the creator of the TOEFL iBT test, hosted a TOEFL Experience Day at The Lalit Mumbai on August 7, bringing together more than 115 participants from Mumbai’s education and study-abroad community.
The event focused on the enhanced TOEFL iBT test, changing student preferences and international study opportunities. ETS experts and senior South Asia team members provided guidance on the test’s four strategic pillars — Fair, Agile, Smart and Tailored (FAST) — and the four skills assessed: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.
Participants also explored the enhanced test format, delivery and assessment approach and received official preparation and classroom-support resources, including lesson plans, a study planner and access to TOEFL Practice Online.
ETS said Mumbai continues to be largely a postgraduate study-abroad market, particularly for master’s programmes, while undergraduate interest is growing among international-school students. Popular fields include Computer Science, AI and machine learning, Data Science, Engineering, Business Analytics, Finance and Management.
The event also highlighted the expansion of student interest beyond traditional destinations such as the US, UK, Ireland, Germany, Australia and New Zealand to options across Europe and Asia, with affordability, scholarships, employability and post-study opportunities influencing decisions.
ETS currently has 10 active TOEFL test centres across Mumbai and its wider regional network, supported by 52 TOEFL Market Ambassadors. The organisation said it plans to expand its engagement across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Speaking on the occasion, Karan Lalit, Executive Director, South Asia, TOEFL and GRE, ETS, said, “Mumbai’s study-abroad market is becoming more self-directed and globally diversified, with students looking beyond destination popularity to consider academic fit, career outcomes and long-term opportunities. This makes access to accurate test information and informed guidance even more important. Through the TOEFL Experience Day, we are bringing ETS’s assessment expertise closer to the educators and counsellors who support students every day, while strengthening access through our test-centre and Market Ambassador network. Our aim is to help students make confident choices and prepare for opportunities across an increasingly wide range of international destinations.”
The Mumbai event is part of ETS’s engagement with education communities across key study-abroad markets, aimed at supporting educators and counsellors with test information and preparation resources.
