Schools across Bengaluru have been issuing advisories to students and parents to be vigilant of strangers attempting to lure children in the pretext of offering them chocolates and sweets.
Recently, Bishop Cotton Boy’s School issued a circular to parents after one of the child’s parents brought such an incident to the notice of the school. The parent said that a stranger approached a child with a chocolate and the child refused the same. Soon after the van driver arrived, the stranger fled.
“Parents are requested to remain vigilant and ensure close supervision of children during arrival and dispersal times. Students are advised not to interact with strangers under any circumstances,” the school notice read.
A similar notice from Baldwin Girl’s High School said that in some schools, attempts were made to attract children by offering sweets or small gifts and initiating casual conversation.
Among the list of precautionary measures, students have been asked not to accept sweets, gifts or any items from unknown people, remain in groups while waiting for school transport or near the school gates, avoid speaking to strangers, irrespective of how polite or friendly they may appear. They have been asked to immediately alert a teacher, staff member or security personnel if approached by someone unfamiliar.
They have asked parents to exercise additional caution during drop-off and pick-up hours. “Promptly inform the school security team if you notice any suspicious individuals around the campus. Please be assured that the safety and well-being of our students is our utmost priority. We value your partnership and continued support in helping us maintain a secure environment for all our children,” the notice read.
