In today’s interconnected world, technology plays a defining role in how students learn, communicate, and express themselves. From online classrooms and educational apps to social media and digital collaboration, the internet has become an inseparable part of daily life. While these tools offer immense opportunities, they also demand a strong sense of responsibility and awareness.
Recognising the growing need to educate young learners about safe digital practices, Rustomjee Cambridge International School (RCIS), Thane, organised a comprehensive Cyber Safety Awareness Campaign for students of Grades 6, 7, and 8.
The initiative was conducted in collaboration with Rustomjee Academy for Global Careers (RAGC) and the Cyber Cell, Thane City Police, reflecting a powerful partnership between educational institutions and law enforcement. The campaign aimed to empower students with knowledge, confidence, and clarity to navigate the digital world responsibly—not with fear, but with awareness and informed decision-making.
Dr Hanif Kanjer emphasised the importance of preparedness in the digital age, stating, “The digital world is where students learn, connect, grow, and create. They must be prepared for it. This campaign helped learners build awareness, confidence, and responsibility online. When students know better, they choose better and create better.”
Mrs Chhaya Mistry, Headmistress of the RCIS Thane branch, aptly summed up the objective of the initiative by sharing, “At RCIS Thane, we don’t want our students to fear the digital world—we teach them to navigate it wisely. This cyber safety initiative encourages our students to think before they click, speak up when unsure, and act responsibly online. Awareness creates confident digital citizens who will be exposed to the digital world much more in the days to come.”
Purpose and Vision Behind the Campaign
The campaign was conceptualised and implemented by a dedicated team of senior students and faculty members. As young adults who actively engage with technology for academics, communication, and professional development, the team understood the importance of guiding school students at an early stage—before unsafe digital habits or misinformation could take root.
The vision was simple yet impactful: to help students view technology as a powerful resource that must be used with discernment, balance, and purpose. Rather than portraying the digital world as dangerous, the campaign focused on building confidence, encouraging reflection, and reinforcing positive digital behaviour. This proactive approach aligned with RCIS Thane’s commitment to holistic education, student well-being, and values-based learning beyond academics.
Student-Led Learning Through Creativity and Connection
One of the most engaging elements of the campaign was its student-led approach. College students designed and performed an interactive skit that presented relatable, real-life online scenarios commonly encountered by school students. Through storytelling, dialogue, and visual representation, the skit effectively conveyed essential cyber safety messages in a manner that was both entertaining and memorable.
The performance highlighted key positive digital habits, including:
-
Being mindful of online interactions
-
Respecting one’s own privacy and that of others
-
Thinking carefully before clicking, sharing, or responding
-
Recognising suspicious or unsafe online behaviour
-
Seeking help from trusted adults when unsure
This peer-to-peer learning model proved highly effective. School students connected easily with the college students, who had recently navigated similar stages of digital exposure. This relatability fostered stronger engagement, open discussions, and a deeper understanding of cyber safety concepts.
Expert Guidance from Cyber Cell, Thane City Police
Adding depth and impact to the campaign was an insightful session led by Senior Police Inspector Prakash Warke from the Cyber Police Station, Thane City. Drawing from real-life cases and professional experience, he addressed common cyber-related concerns faced by students in a reassuring and age-appropriate manner.
His interaction focused on:
-
Protecting personal information online
-
Identifying suspicious messages, links, and online behaviour
-
Using social media responsibly and respectfully
-
Understanding the importance of reporting cyber incidents
A strong emphasis was placed on awareness and timely action as the most effective safeguards in the digital space. Students were also introduced to essential support systems, including the National Cybercrime Helpline (1930) and the official reporting portal, cybercrime.gov.in, ensuring they knew where and how to seek help if needed.
Key Takeaways for Young Digital Citizens
The campaign provided students with practical and actionable lessons that they could apply in their everyday digital interactions:
-
Responsible and respectful use of technology and social media
-
Protecting personal information with the same seriousness as physical safety
-
Recognising warning signs of unsafe digital behaviour
-
Knowing when to pause, reflect, and seek guidance
-
Understanding that support systems are always available
The overall message remained positive and empowering—cyber safety is not about fear, but about confidence, clarity, and making informed choices.
A Step Towards a Safer Digital Future
The Cyber Safety Awareness Campaign stands as a meaningful example of how collaboration, creativity, and expert guidance can create lasting impact. By combining student leadership, engaging storytelling, and professional insights, the initiative successfully opened a constructive dialogue around cyber safety.
RCIS Thane sincerely acknowledges the guidance and support of the Cyber Cell, Thane City Police, and appreciates the enthusiastic efforts of the college students and faculty who made this initiative impactful. Such collaborations play a vital role in nurturing confident, responsible, and informed digital citizens.
The campaign concluded with a simple yet powerful message:
“When awareness begins early, students grow into confident and responsible digital citizens.”
As technology continues to evolve, so must our understanding of how to use it wisely. True digital intelligence extends beyond technical knowledge—it encompasses strong values, accountability, empathy, and informed decision-making. By encouraging students to pause before clicking, sharing, or responding, and to voice concerns whenever they feel uncertain, this initiative has taken an important step towards building a safer, smarter, and more responsible digital society—one student at a time.
