Government officials, legal experts and educationists on Saturday discussed a framework to integrate Indian languages into legal education while retaining English as a common language across the judicial system.
The proposed framework aims to improve legal comprehension, expand access to justice and better prepare law students for practice in district and subordinate courts.
Participants highlighted the role of AI-powered translation tools, digital legal repositories and standardised legal glossaries in supporting the transition. They stressed that all technological tools should be validated by legal and linguistic experts to ensure accuracy.
The conference resolved to draft a National Declaration on Indian Languages in Legal Education, prepare a 10-year action plan and establish a National Steering Committee, co-anchored by the Department of Legal Affairs and the Bar Council of India, to oversee implementation.
Senior officials from the Union Law Ministry, representatives of the Bar Council of India and legal and education experts attended the meeting.
