Former West Bengal fovernor and renowned educationist Dnyandeo Yashwantrao (D.Y.) Patil died on Tuesday at the age of 92, marking the end of a career that spanned public service, politics and the transformation of private higher education in India.

While Patil served as the governor of Tripura, Bihar and later West Bengal between 2009 and 2014, he was best known for building one of India’s largest private education networks. Beginning with the establishment of the Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology in Navi Mumbai in 1983, he laid the foundation for the D.Y. Patil Group, which grew into a vast network of educational and healthcare institutions.

Over the next four decades, the group expanded to include schools and colleges offering engineering, medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, management, architecture and law programmes, besides establishing deemed universities in Navi Mumbai, Pune and Kolhapur. Today, the D.Y. Patil Group comprises more than 150 educational institutions, several hospitals and research centres, educating thousands of students from India and abroad.

Patil was among the early proponents of private participation in technical and professional education at a time when demand for engineering and medical education far exceeded the capacity of public institutions. His vision helped expand access to professional education in Maharashtra and contributed to the state’s emergence as a major higher education hub.

Apart from establishing educational institutions, Patil also served as Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), where he played a role in shaping policy during a period of rapid expansion in technical education. In recognition of his contributions to education and public service, he was conferred the Padma Shri in 1991.

His institutions also diversified into healthcare and sports infrastructure, with several teaching hospitals and internationally recognised sports facilities becoming part of the D.Y. Patil ecosystem. Although the rapid growth of private higher education has often attracted scrutiny over affordability and commercialisation, Patil’s contribution to expanding educational opportunities remains widely acknowledged. His legacy endures through the institutions that continue to educate generations of students and provide healthcare services across the country.
