With just three days left for the third language exams of state board grade 10, Karnataka’s minister for school education and literacy, Madhu Bangarappa on Friday said that the marks secured in this exam will not be counted for the total score a student secures.
Students appearing for the Senior School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) Exams are scheduled to write their third language exam on March 31. Although these marks will not be considered in the overall total, students will have to mandatorily attend the exams.
Effective from these ongoing exams itself, it means that the total marks in SSLC exams have now been reduced from 625 to 525. The 100 marks paper of third language is not considered now.
Bangarappa justified that this announcement comes in the wake of some pro-Kannada organisations pushing for the same. He said that although there were several language options to be picked as third language, a large majority of schools have picked Hindi. He believes that this would result in an indirect imposition to learn the language.
Grading system
Bangarappa said that the state board will, instead, introduce a grading system for assessment of third language so that students do not bear the examination pressure of learning Hindi or fear of exams.
“Until now, in the 625-mark examination, 100 marks were allotted to the third language. Going forward, there will be no pass or fail system for the third language. This means that the marks obtained in the third language will not be considered for the overall result. Instead, grades (such as A, B, C, D) will be awarded,” the Minister clarified. This rule will apply to all third languages included in the curriculum, such as Hindi, Sanskrit, Tulu, Marathi, and Arabic.
Moral science
Moral Science Introduced for Students: From the current academic year, students will be provided with free ‘Moral Science’ textbooks by the government. This is a step towards shaping responsible citizens, he said.
Criticism
D Shashi Kumar, general secretary, Associated Managements of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka called it a deplorable move.
“What was the tearing hurry to introduce such a change in the middle of ongoing board exams? One must be mindful of the impact it will have on children. Kannada is a third language for other medium of instructions (for example Urdu or Tamil medium schools). Grading system will only minimize the importance of learning Kannada in such schools even further. Keep an examination for a minimum of 50 marks atleast.
“The three-language policy idea was pushed in Karnataka when the congress government was in power itself. Nationally and internationally, experts believe that it is beneficial for students to learn three languages or more for improved cognitive functioning. Even in comparison with the other boards, our children are bound to feel deprived,” he said.
Meanwhile, the principal of a private school in Jayanagar remarked, “The government is bogging down to pressure from extremist forces and prioritizing their appeasement over the welfare of children. If this was the case, students might have as well focused their attention on learning other subjects from the start of the academic year and performed better than students of other boards. Such irrational last-minute decisions without any consultation is not a welcome move.”

The timing of such a move and the logic as explained by the hon minister is totally ridiculous.
Such decisions require serous consultations with all stake holders… but when did this present government consult anybody on any issue. Unfortunate is an understatement.

please don’t do politics in education system… They all are small kid’s… now pressure will come on them to grab percentage in other subjects… last minute changes may ruin their future 😔

I think this is a hasty decision and needs to be reviewed consulting the educational experts.
Government should encourage to learn different languages so that they will get option to go outside the state and have a comfortable living.
Discouraging Hindi our national language will create chaos which will lead to unhealthy environment. Please push the feelings and pressurise the government to review and take a right decision which will be useful to the society at large

without any survey or consulting the parents this sudden move in the middle of the ongoing sslc exam is stupidity and without application of find.when we are preparing and encouraging our children to face the challenges in future whether in India or abroad, how is that you forgot that hindi is our national language besides mother tongue or local language one has to learn the common language to survive too.hasty decision not acceptable

Lets not consider this at exam time, let the student write the Exam, as they have thorough with one year by reading & writing with study efforts becomes waste,
This third language subject is useful for thier career development when they work in other states, let this run as it is.
After examination discuss with debate session about the importance for our state & pass the verdict with legal interpretation whether it has to continue or not.
And see the employment recruitment of our Karnataka peoples prior importance in banking sectors, IT sectors to be involved more, As we kannadigas should know these few languages to lead the life in national integrity nation. let’s not diverisify these matter @ Exam time.
Let this 3rd language marks support the other subjects in which students might taken low in marks. thankyou.

Absolutely true. This is not a correct time and correct decision. Hindi as third language subject is useful for students career development when they work in other states. The verdict with legal interpretation whether it has to continue or not absulty needed. We r not only closing the doors for IT and Bank sectors but also for comman people who go for any work to other states. This decision is not beneficial for Karnataka people. what about national integrity? Hindi is the most spoken language in India by mejority of the population whether educated or uneducated. Giving less important to this language in education would affect karanataka.
Atleast before taking this decision the surveys , openion, debates, discussion should be done in Karnataka. if the students are finding a language difficult then a solution must be found out to make it easier rather than removing it’ place. For example we can develop the teaching quality throw proper teacher training, conducting Hindi language development workshops and should be actually implemented. There are many other ways too.
But this is not the solution what they have taken. The decision should be reconsider.

down grading the standard of education. Politicians should give authorities to educated authorities to take such decisions. This may have negative effect outside Karnataka.

It will be beneficial for students to learn three languages. Making changes while exams are going on will have negative impact on students.

this ridiculous…. students are prepared for exams, all CCE / activities they have completed…. in the last movement the decision has been taken…. no discussion, no suggestion nothing…. then what is the value of hindi teachers who completed their B. Ed…. Atleast think about it is a national language of India…
some schools have Kannada… how about those students….

A very wrong descision taken by the minister. It goes against the interest of the children.Learning three languages is an advantage not a hindrance as stated. Children have the ability to handle three languages.Political interference is not rewuired in making changes in the education system.

we want justice for our third language hindi as a student I want to say that if the language had to be removed then it it should be ordered before the academic year so that we can focus on other subjects. we want Hindi because it was our scoring subject. this law should be prohibited because some children’s are very week in maths and Kannada
please we all the students of NCERT request the education minister to not confirm the statement of the language to be cancelled and the total marks will be given as 625 please let the total marks will be 625

I would like to share my feedback regarding this decision.
Excluding third language marks from the total score is not in the best interest of students. It will negatively impact those who wish to pursue a career in that language, as their effort and performance will no longer be properly recognized.
In a diverse state like Karnataka, where people speak different mother tongues, such a decision can disadvantage many students. Language learning is important for overall development, and reducing the importance of any subject is not appropriate.
Moreover, making attendance compulsory while not counting the marks is contradictory. This can create confusion and unnecessary pressure among students.
Important decisions related to education should not be taken in haste or under pressure. The government should consult students, teachers, and experts before implementing such changes, keeping long-term impacts in mind.
Therefore, I request the authorities to reconsider this decision in the interest of students and their future.

In India – every citizen, every child in every state must know Hindi and Hindi subject must be given equal weight as given to other subjects and state languages bcoz Hindi is our National Language.
Dr Mohammed Nooruddin
Really a deplorable decision taken in haste. If at all it was necessary they could have done it from next academic year. But in the middle of board exams neutralising 100 marks will affect the moral and determination of deserving students who have worked hard since the beginning.
Education should be in the hands of educated people to understand this.
Aashish
Also, if now some pro organizations say that learning English is difficult then will they cancel English also ?
Lubna
As per the news this is not fair we students have worked so hard and have submitted all the assignments for a year. And this is the scoring subject for us. I stand behalf of all to kindly support us and do what is needful for the students
Saleem pasha
This decision is worst at the end moment,
govt should not yield from the pressure of extremist. This is the future of students and Hindi is our National language.
if it is necessary and must let it be from next academic year.
Karuna Karan
To all supporters for Hindi – Hindi is not national language if we want to consider kindly look Tamil as national language as it’s oldest language in the world and proven, respect of students interest learn language only with interested.
