The Maharashtra government is conducting, for the first time ever, a Marathi One-Act Play Competition for college students across the state
Organised by the state’s Cultural Affairs Department, the competition is being hosted in four regions this year. There are no entry fees.
The Konkan region will kick off the
competition from today January 19 to 23, 2026 at the Yashwant Natya Mandir in Matunga, Mumbai.
Preliminary rounds are being held in three other regions namely Pune, Amravati and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
This will be “a golden opportunity for theatre groups from across the state,” cultural affairs minister Ashish Shelar said.
From the teams that performs in the preliminary round, 5 best teams from each division will be selected for the grand finale of 20 teams.
Minister Shelar said that the main objective of the competition is to provide a platform to emerging artists in Marathi theatre, revitalize the one-act play movement, and further enrich the heritage of Maharashtra’s cultural tradition.
Director of cultural affairs Bibhishan Chavare has appealed to theatre groups “to take advantage of the opportunity and participate in the one-act competition.”
