Recognised as an Institution of Eminence, the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) has consistently stood at the forefront of academic excellence and innovation. As education transcends physical boundaries, MAHE has embraced digital transformation with purpose, emerging as a global force in online and lifelong learning.
At the centre of this transformation stands Dr. Manojkumar Nagasampige, founding director of the Centre for Distance & Online Education (CDOE) – a visionary leader who has been instrumental in propelling MAHE’s internationalisation through technology-enabled education.
With over two decades of experience in distance and online education, Dr. Nagasampige’s journey reflects continuous reinvention. Trained in biotechnology, he transitioned into a management professional and went on to establish himself as a strong edtech leader in higher education. His early shift from campus-based education to Open and Distance Learning (ODL) in 2005 positioned him ahead of the curve in India’s digital education landscape.
When MAHE initiated its online programmes in 2020, the scale was modest-just 114 students from Africa. Under his leadership, this initiative has grown exponentially to over 15,000 learners across the globe, pursuing programmes in management, data science, and analytics. This remarkable growth is underpinned by a strong focus on quality, learner engagement, and global relevance.
A defining milestone in this journey has been MAHE’s contribution to the e-VidyaBharati and e-ArogyaBharati (eVBAB) Pan-African Project-a flagship initiative of the Government of India aimed at delivering education to African nations. Through this project, MAHE has extended its academic offerings to learners across Africa, strengthening global academic ties and contributing to India’s educational diplomacy.
Dr. Nagasampige has also been at the forefront of integrating education with industry through Work Integrated Learning Programmes (WILP). By enabling employees of leading corporates to pursue higher education alongside their careers, these programs bridge the gap between academic knowledge and workplace application-creating value for both individuals and organisations.
Recognising the urgent need for continuous upskilling in an era defined by rapid skill obsolescence, he was instrumental in establishing the Centre for Microcredentials at MAHE. This initiative focuses on delivering agile, skill-based programs tailored for working professionals. By developing co-created microcredentials in collaboration with industry, MAHE ensures that learners acquire practical, job-ready competencies that align with evolving market demands. This strategic move reinforces MAHE’s commitment to lifelong learning and positions it as a forward-thinking institution in the age of skill decay.
His leadership is characterised by a balance of academic rigour and operational excellence. With deep expertise in programme development, accreditation, and digital learning ecosystems, he has built a scalable yet quality-driven model for online education. From designing industry-aligned curricula to enabling global delivery platforms, his contributions have positioned MAHE Online as a credible and competitive player on the world stage.
His journey is not just about building programmes – is about building possibilities. As MAHE continues to expand its global footprint, Dr. Manojkumar Nagasampige remains a driving force behind its mission to make high-quality education accessible, relevant, and future-ready.
In essence, his work reflects a powerful belief: Education must not only inform-it must evolve, empower, and endure.
