The Padma Awards 2026 have recognised a wide range of educationists, scientists and academic leaders for their contributions to higher education, literature, research and institution-building across India.
Announced on the eve of Republic Day, the awards highlight the government’s continued focus on education, research and scientific innovation as key components of national development. The honours span the three categories of Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
Among those recognised is former University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, noted for his role in shaping higher education policy and regulatory reforms. IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti has also been honoured for his work in computer science and academic leadership.
In literature and education, the list includes scholars and writers such as P Narayanan, Asok Kumar Haldar, Charan Hembram, Gambir Singh Yonzone, Sivasankari and Vempaty Kutumba Sastry, reflecting contributions to regional languages, indigenous literature, Sanskrit studies and literary scholarship. Several awardees have been recognised for their efforts in preserving linguistic heritage and strengthening education at the grassroots level.
The science and engineering category features researchers and educators including AE Muthunayagam, Kumarasamy Thangaraj, Juzer Vasi and Shubha Venkatesha Iyengar, whose work spans aerospace, genetics, engineering and science education.
Together, the Padma Awards 2026 underline the role of universities, research institutions and scholars in shaping India’s academic and scientific landscape, recognising long-term contributions that have influenced policy, teaching and knowledge creation.
