St. Peter’s School Panchgani, A Residential & Day School, has opened an on-campus gallery dedicated to the early life of its former student, Freddie Mercury, the lead vocalist of the rock band Queen.
The gallery documents Mercury’s years at the school through archival photographs, reproduced records, personal anecdotes and narrative installations. It also highlights his participation in “The Hectics”, the school band he formed while studying in Panchgani, as well as his involvement in music-related activities including piano and choir performances.
The exhibition traces Mercury’s journey from Zanzibar to India and provides visitors with an account of his life as a boarding student before he became an international music figure. The display includes timelines, recreated storytelling elements and memorabilia-inspired installations.
“There is something deeply moving about knowing that a voice which would one day resonate across the world first found its footing here,” said Brian Robbins, Principal of St. Peter’s School Panchgani. “This gallery is not about celebrating fame in hindsight; it is about understanding beginnings.”
According to the school, the initiative forms part of its efforts to document its institutional history and provide students with a greater understanding of the people who studied on its campus.
The gallery is now open to students, parents, alumni and visitors.
