Eight people, including the suspect, have died in a shooting at a secondary school in British Columbia, with two more people found dead at a nearby home believed to be connected to the incident, Canadian authorities said on Tuesday.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said more than 25 people were injured in the shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, including two with life-threatening injuries.
Police said officers entered the school in response to reports of an active shooter and located multiple victims during a search of the building. An individual believed to be the gunman was found dead with what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.
“Six additional individuals, not including the suspect, have been located deceased inside the school,” the RCMP said in a statement. “Two victims have been airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries. A third victim died while being transported to hospital.”
Two other people were found dead at a home thought to be linked to the suspect. Police have not released further details about those deaths.
RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd said investigators had identified the shooter but were not releasing a name. The motive remains unclear.
“We are not in a place to understand why or what may have motivated this tragedy,” Floyd said, adding that officers are still investigating how the victims are connected to the suspect.
The Peace River South School District said there had been a “lockdown and secure and hold” at both Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School.
Tumbler Ridge, a town of about 2,400 people, is located more than 1,000 kilometres north of Vancouver, near the border with Alberta. The provincial government website lists the secondary school as having 175 pupils in Years 7 to 12.
Larry Neufeld, the member of the legislative assembly for Peace River South, said additional RCMP officers and ambulance services had been sent to the community. He said he would not release further information due to concerns about the ongoing operation.
