University of Western Australia (UWA) has announced an annual scholarship programme through UWA India, marking a major standalone commitment in the Indian market. The initiative aims to expand access to internationally recognised education for students from diverse academic, socioeconomic and regional backgrounds.
Professor Amit Chakma, Vice-Chancellor of UWA, said the programme reflects the university’s long-term engagement with India and its focus on reducing financial barriers for students pursuing global careers.
Applications for UWA India are now open. With campuses planned in Mumbai and Chennai, the initiative will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across STEM, business and technology disciplines aligned with industry demand.
The scholarship framework will be delivered primarily through tuition fee reductions and will include merit-based awards, global excellence scholarships, equity and CSR-supported funding, and State Government co-funded opportunities in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Alumni-backed scholarships will also form part of the programme.
Students may combine multiple forms of financial support, subject to eligibility criteria, to reduce overall costs while maintaining academic standards. All scholarships will be administered under UWA’s existing policies, with criteria to be published ahead of each admissions cycle.
The programme will be introduced alongside the first intake of UWA India admissions and will be reviewed after its first year to assess uptake and scope for expansion.
The initiative forms part of UWA’s broader strategy to strengthen education and skills partnerships between India and Australia while improving access and affordability in higher education.
