Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has been ranked 37th globally in the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026 and secured the top position in India for Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9).
The rankings assess universities’ contributions towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year’s edition evaluated more than 1,500 institutions from over 115 countries and regions, with the results announced at the Global Sustainable Development Congress 2026 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Amrita was placed among the global top 25 universities for Quality Education (SDG 4), Gender Equality (SDG 5), No Poverty (SDG 1), Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), and Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7).
The university also ranked among the top 50 worldwide for Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9) and Climate Action (SDG 13), while securing a top 100 position for Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3). It was also featured for the first time in the rankings for No Poverty (SDG 1), Zero Hunger (SDG 2), and Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7).
Chancellor Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi said universities should be assessed not only on research output and funding, but also on how effectively research serves vulnerable communities and contributes to social development.
Dr Maneesha V. Ramesh, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the School for Sustainable Futures, said the recognition reflected the university’s focus on applying research to address community needs, including disaster resilience, water access and rural development initiatives across India.
According to the university, its outreach programmes currently operate in 2,800 villages across the country, supporting the translation of research into practical solutions for local communities.
