France has expanded its Classes Internationales programme to create earlier study-abroad pathways for Indian students, as part of its goal to host 30,000 Indian students by 2030.
The initiative offers a preparatory academic route aimed at helping students transition into undergraduate and higher education programmes in French universities. It reflects a wider shift in global education, where students are increasingly seeking international exposure at the undergraduate level, supported by structured preparation in language, academics and culture.
During his recent visit to India, Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to strengthening education ties with India. He stated that France currently hosts around 10,000 Indian students annually and aims to increase this figure to 30,000 by 2030, in partnership with Narendra Modi. He added that France would simplify procedures and enhance visa facilities to support this target.
Thierry Mathou said the programme would help Indian students transition into French universities and pursue career opportunities supported by France’s education system.
The programme includes a preparatory year in France combining French language training, academic orientation, cultural immersion and transition support. More than 30 French higher education institutions are participating, offering access to over 200 undergraduate programmes across disciplines.
Language preparation is a central component, with many students training through Alliance Française centres to achieve A2-level proficiency before beginning their studies.
Applications for the 2026 intake are open via the official portal, with guidance available through Campus France offices. The initiative is coordinated in India by Campus France in partnership with the French Institute in India.
The programme, initially focused on India, has been extended to other countries in the Indo-Pacific and Africa.
