School schedules have been revised across several Indian states as a heatwave drives daytime temperatures beyond 44°C in multiple regions. Authorities have introduced precautionary measures to reduce student exposure during peak afternoon hours, with early morning shifts becoming the norm in affected areas.
States including Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra and Rajasthan have adjusted school hours, with most institutions now operating between early morning and midday. In Rajasthan, schools for pre-primary to Class 8 are running from 7:30 am to 12:00 pm from April 27 until the end of the academic session. Similar schedules have been implemented elsewhere, with some states beginning classes as early as 6:30 am.
In addition to revised timings, several states have announced early summer vacations or temporary closures. Chhattisgarh has advanced its summer break to April 20–June 15. Odisha has declared holidays from April 27, while West Bengal schools began summer vacations on April 22, excluding hill regions such as Darjeeling. Tripura has ordered school closures from April 24 to May 1, and Jharkhand authorities have advised temporary shutdowns in severely affected areas.
Schools that remain open have adopted measures to address heat-related risks. A “water bell” system has been introduced in parts of Delhi and Uttarakhand to ensure regular hydration. Outdoor activities, assemblies and classes have been restricted between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm in states including Delhi and Telangana.
Despite reduced classroom hours, teaching staff in some states, including Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, are required to remain on campus until early afternoon.
Authorities continue to monitor conditions, with no immediate relief forecast. Educational institutions are operating under heat-management protocols aimed at maintaining continuity while addressing health concerns.
