The Indian education sector is undergoing one of the most significant transformations in its history. From the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 to the rapid digitalisation of learning and rising school enrolments, the education ecosystem is expanding at an unprecedented pace.
Yet, while classrooms, curricula and learning technologies are evolving rapidly, one critical aspect of education has remained largely unchanged: assessment infrastructure.
Assessment is a cornerstone of the education system. It shapes how students learn and how teachers teach. However, many of the tools and processes used to evaluate learning were designed for a time when student numbers were far lower and the education system was far less complex.
The Scale Challenge
India has one of the world’s largest student populations, with more than 250 million school-going children. Every year, educational institutions and examination boards conduct millions of tests, examinations and evaluations across the country.
As student numbers continue to grow and competency-based learning becomes more widely adopted, the demand for high-quality assessments is increasing significantly. Teachers are expected to evaluate larger numbers of students while providing meaningful feedback that supports improved learning outcomes.
However, this remains an enormous challenge. Assessment processes are often labour-intensive, time-consuming and heavily dependent on manual effort. As a result, teachers spend a substantial amount of time evaluating answer scripts instead of teaching, mentoring and supporting students.
A YouGov and GL Assessment survey of more than 800 school staff found that teachers spend an average of 6 hours and 48 minutes each week on testing and assessment activities—equivalent to 44 days over an academic year.
This highlights the growing need for intelligent assessment systems and AI-powered tools that can reduce the administrative burden on educators, enabling them to devote more time to teaching, student engagement and personalised academic support rather than routine evaluation tasks.
The Shift from Marks to Mastery
Another reason assessment infrastructure requires urgent attention is the shift in the philosophy of education itself.
The NEP emphasises competency-based learning, critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity and holistic development. This is a welcome shift because the skills needed for the future cannot be measured through memorisation alone.
However, assessing higher-order thinking skills is considerably more complex than evaluating objective responses. It requires more sophisticated assessment methods, clearly defined evaluation criteria and greater consistency among evaluators.
While the focus of education has evolved, many assessment tools still rely on methods designed primarily to measure content knowledge. This gap must be addressed through modern assessment infrastructure, including AI-powered assessment tools that support the evaluation of higher-order thinking and competency-based learning outcomes.
Such systems should enable teachers to assess deeper learning effectively without significantly increasing their workload.
The Need for Faster and More Actionable Feedback
Assessment should not be used solely as a means of awarding marks.
Its primary purpose should be to improve learning. When there is a long delay between an assessment and the delivery of feedback, its educational value diminishes considerably. By the time students receive feedback, they may already have moved on to new topics, reducing the opportunity for teachers to address learning gaps effectively.
Educational institutions therefore need systems that provide accurate insights quickly, enabling timely intervention.
Recent concerns over inconsistencies in evaluation have also highlighted the limitations of traditional assessment methods. According to CBSE, more than 87% of re-evaluation requests required independent review in 2026.
Why Technology Must Become an Assessment Enabler
Technology has already transformed education by improving content delivery, student engagement, administration and communication. Assessment is the next area where it can make a meaningful impact.
Artificial intelligence and data analytics now offer opportunities to make evaluation more efficient, consistent and insightful. These technologies can help teachers reduce routine administrative tasks without compromising academic integrity or professional judgement.
However, technology is not a substitute for teachers. Their expertise, contextual understanding and professional judgement remain indispensable.
Instead, technology should function as an intelligent assistant that helps teachers save time, maintain consistency and focus more on supporting students than on repetitive administrative work. Modern AI-powered grading software and automated assessment systems can accelerate evaluation, improve objectivity and generate valuable insights that would otherwise be difficult to obtain.
Building Trust Through Transparency
As technology becomes more integrated into assessment, building trust will be essential. Parents, students and teachers must be confident that evaluation systems are fair, transparent and reliable.
Modernisation efforts should therefore prioritise explainability, data security and reducing teacher workload.
Technology should strengthen trust in assessment, not undermine it. Institutions adopting modern assessment systems must also ensure that teachers retain responsibility for setting assessment criteria and making final academic judgements. Transparency will be critical to achieving widespread acceptance.
Preparing for the Future of Learning
The future of education will be shaped by greater personalisation, data-driven insights and competency-based learning. Students will increasingly learn through multiple channels, interact with adaptive learning platforms and develop skills that extend well beyond traditional academic disciplines.
