An MBBS student, caught in a debt trap following online gaming addiction was found hanging from the ceiling fan at his hostel room of Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences in Karnataka’s Bidar district on Tuesday.
According to police sources, Anishkar had developed an addiction to online gaming over the past few years and had reportedly incurred repeated financial losses. Recently, he is believed to have lost nearly Rs.80,000—money he had borrowed—while gaming online. Investigators suspect that mounting debts and increasing pressure from lenders to repay the borrowed amount may have pushed him to take the extreme step.
Family members and acquaintances told police that Anishkar had been under considerable stress in recent weeks due to his financial situation. Authorities are examining his financial transactions and online activity to better understand the circumstances leading to the incident.
Anishkar came from an academically accomplished family. His elder brother is currently pursuing his final-year MBBS BRIMS, while his sister is studying for her MD in Bengaluru after completing her MBBS from the Bidar Government Medical College.
Superintendent of Police Pradeep Gunti visited the BRIMS hostel as part of the inquiry and gathered information from students and college staff regarding Anishkar’s background and recent activities.
The New Town Police Station has registered a case, and further investigation is currently underway to determine the exact sequence of events and contributing factors. Authorities have also urged the public to be cautious about the risks associated with online gaming and unregulated financial borrowing.
