O.P. Jindal Global University has launched three new master’s degree programmes in Legislative Drafting, Electoral Analysis & Management, and Political Communication.
The programmes were launched in the presence of Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, and Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State for Law & Justice (Independent Charge), Government of India. Also present were Tushar Mehta, Solicitor General of India; Naveen Jindal, Chancellor of the university and Member of Parliament; and R. Venkataramani, Attorney General for India.
The one-year programmes include an M.A. in Legislative Drafting, an M.A. in Electoral Analysis & Management, and an M.A. in Political Communication. The university said the courses are designed to address the demand for trained professionals in election administration, political communication and law-making.
Speaking at the launch, Mr Birla said the programmes would contribute to strengthening democratic processes and institutions. Referring to India’s electoral history since 1952, he said the study of electoral analysis would encourage research and participation in democracy. He also noted the use of AI technology in Parliament to improve engagement between legislators and citizens.
Mr Meghwal said legislative drafting requires precision, adding that every word in the Constitution carries meaning. He said the programmes would help students understand governance and legislative processes.
In a message, Mr Venkataramani said a full-fledged course in legislative drafting was needed and expressed hope that the programmes would attract talent. Mr Mehta said legislative drafting is often overlooked and described it as a discipline that can be taught and developed.
Mr Jindal said the courses would support India’s democratic processes and provide new academic pathways in electoral analysis and legislative drafting.
In his address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar said the programmes aim to strengthen legislative and political processes through academic engagement and research. He added that the courses include internships, live projects, simulations and interaction with policymakers and communication professionals to enhance employability.
According to the university, the M.A. in Electoral Analysis & Management will cover electoral systems, voter behaviour, campaign strategy, election administration and data analytics. The M.A. in Political Communication will focus on the relationship between politics, media, technology and public opinion. The M.A. in Legislative Drafting will provide training in drafting laws and regulations, statutory interpretation and constitutional principles.
The programmes will prepare graduates for roles in legislatures, government departments, regulatory bodies, political organisations, consulting firms, media organisations and international institutions.
