A senior clerk with the Maharashtra education department was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh to approve the operation of a junior college in Mumbai, officials said.
The accused, identified as Rahul Vitthal Shinde, was posted at the deputy director’s office on Charni Road in south Mumbai.
According to officials, Shinde had allegedly demanded the money from a complainant in exchange for granting approval to run Classes 11 and 12 at an educational institute.
The complainant approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on April 13 after refusing to pay the bribe.
Acting on the complaint, ACB officials laid a trap at the education department office on Tuesday and apprehended Shinde while he was allegedly accepting the money.
A case has been registered against him under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and he has been taken into custody.
