Germany is seeing sustained growth as a higher education destination for Indian students, with Maharashtra contributing a significant share to this trend. According to DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst), around 59,419 Indian students are currently studying in Germany, reflecting an annual increase of 25–30 per cent.
In Maharashtra, rising awareness, improved access to German language training, and visa processes are driving interest among students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses across disciplines including engineering, management and the arts.
YES Germany, a consultancy focused on German higher education, has expanded its presence across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Pune, supporting students through the application and admission process. The organisation assists approximately 700–800 students each year, with around 60 per cent from the Mumbai region and 40 per cent from Pune, according to Director Anuj Deshmukh.
Germany’s appeal is linked to the availability of nearly 20,000 courses, stable economic conditions and post-study opportunities across Europe. Students are also attracted by relatively accessible visa procedures and the prospect of entering the European job market after graduation.
Dr Latika Chaudhary, CEO of YES Germany, said the combination of academic quality, affordability and career prospects is contributing to increased interest among students in the state.
Economic ties between India and Germany continue to reinforce this trend. Maharashtra accounts for nearly 49 per cent of German foreign direct investment inflows into India between 2019 and 2024, according to government data. The Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, the largest German chamber of commerce outside Germany, also highlights the depth of economic cooperation.
With a growing student and professional community in Germany, Maharashtra is emerging as a major contributor to India’s outbound student mobility to the country.
