The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a retest for three papers of the UGC-NET June 2026 examination — English, Commerce and Sociology — following complaints about errors in the question papers.
The English and Commerce papers will be held on September 9. English will be conducted from 9 am to noon in Shift 1, while Commerce will be held from 3 pm to 6 pm in Shift 2. The Sociology paper will be conducted on September 10 from 9 am to noon.
The NTA conducted the UGC-NET June 2026 examination from June 22 to 30 across 87 subjects for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), eligibility for assistant professor and admission to PhD programmes.
According to the NTA, a committee constituted to examine complaints found factual, typographical and translation errors in the three papers. These included misspelt names of scholars, incorrect book titles, errors in question wording, grammatical and punctuation mistakes, non-standard terms and repetition of previously administered questions.
The committee recommended re-conducting the three papers to ensure a fair examination. The NTA said the errors could not be addressed only by dropping questions after the challenge process.
No additional examination fee will be charged for the retest. Details of examination cities, centres and admit cards will be notified separately on the NTA’s official website.
Results for the other 84 subjects, for which the answer key challenge was issued, will be declared as scheduled. The NTA said the retest will not delay the allocation of JRF seats or issuance of e-certificates for these subjects.
For eligibility for assistant professor, the number of candidates qualifying will be 6 per cent of those who appeared in the June examination or the retest, whichever is higher.
The NTA also said that after the retest, the number of candidates already allocated to each subject will not be reduced.
