The Occupational English Test (OET) has conducted a series of teacher training workshops across Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Kochi, bringing together more than 60 educators from institutions and coaching centres in Kerala and neighbouring regions.
The initiative focused on strengthening educators’ ability to teach receptive skills, particularly reading and listening, within healthcare contexts. Participants were introduced to updated teaching content, classroom strategies and learner-centred approaches aimed at improving engagement and learning outcomes.
The workshops featured live demonstrations, lesson-building exercises and interactive sessions that allowed educators to experience lessons from a learner’s perspective. The programme also explored ways to connect language instruction with practical healthcare communication, including interpreting clinical information and responding to patient interactions.
Speaking about the initiative, Amit Upadhyay, Regional Director at OET, said that communication is increasingly being recognised as a core professional skill in healthcare systems worldwide. He said the workshops were designed to help educators adopt teaching approaches that prepare learners for real healthcare environments.
Participants said the sessions offered practical techniques to improve lesson planning, learner engagement and confidence in teaching reading and listening skills.
OET said the programme reflects growing demand for communication training as healthcare professionals seek opportunities in countries such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. The organisation plans to expand its specialised educator training programmes across India in line with changing learner needs and global healthcare workforce requirements.
