A Rajasthan state school team that travelled to Manipur for the National School Games was allegedly extorted by an armed group, prompting the authorities to order an enquiry, officials said on Monday.
The allegation surfaced after the father of a player shared a video on social media, claiming the 52-member team was detained for two hours at gunpoint while travelling by bus from Dimapur in Nagaland to Imphal on January 13, and that money was taken from them.
The team, which participated in the Wushu competition, left Imphal early on Monday without lodging a formal complaint.
Officials said no grievance was raised with the authorities during the team’s stay, despite a control room being located near their hostel at Khuman Lampak stadium.
“We came to know about the extortion claims through video clips being circulated on social media,” an official said, adding that police had been asked to verify the allegations.
In a letter to the Imphal West Superintendent of Police, Youth Affairs and Sports Director M Veto Singh requested verification of the claims and appropriate legal action.
The Rajasthan contingent had travelled to Dimapur by train and recorded strong results at the championships, with the girls’ team finishing first and the boys’ team second.
The 69th National School Games Championships 2025–26 were inaugurated last week by the Manipur Governor at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium.
Manipur has witnessed prolonged ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023, in which more than 260 people have been killed and thousands displaced. The state has been under President’s Rule since February last year.
