The University of Galway and Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) have signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand cooperation in research, academic programmes and student and faculty exchanges.
The agreement aims to strengthen collaboration between the two institutions through joint research initiatives, academic mobility and the development of new educational programmes.
The partnership will also provide students with international learning opportunities and support collaborative innovation projects. Both institutions said the collaboration would bring together Ireland’s research strengths and India’s growing scientific and academic capabilities.
As part of the engagement, the universities are exploring cooperation in life sciences, particularly biotechnology, including potential 2+2 and progression-based programmes that would allow students to study at both institutions.
Prof. Alex Metcalfe, Vice President International at the University of Galway, said India remained an important partner for the university in research, innovation and academic collaboration. He said the partnership with VIT would create opportunities for collaborative knowledge creation and strengthen institutional ties between the two countries.
Sudarshan S, Assistant Director of Corporate Communication at VIT, said the agreement reflected a shared commitment to higher education, innovation, interdisciplinary research and global engagement. He added that the partnership would promote academic and cultural exchanges while contributing to educational and research cooperation between India and Ireland.
The two institutions said discussions would continue to identify priority areas for collaboration and develop new initiatives under the partnership.
