WeNaturalists has engaged around 3,000 students across India through its Campus Champions Programme, a student-led initiative focused on environmental and sustainability action on college campuses.
Launched just over a year ago, the programme is now active in more than 15 campuses across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Rajasthan and Karnataka. The organisation plans to expand the initiative to at least 50 campuses over the next three years.
The programme enables students to lead sustainability initiatives within their institutions. Each Campus Champion coordinates a group of students and works with the WeNaturalists team, receiving mentorship, guidance, resources and digital tools to implement projects on campus.
According to the organisation, the initiative focuses on building continuity in campus sustainability efforts. Students are encouraged to design and execute projects relevant to their campuses while also exploring career pathways linked to the green economy through mentorship and professional networks.
Students and campuses that have completed one year in the programme are now supporting new participants entering the network. Student-led content from participating campuses is also shared through the organisation’s digital platform, which connects a community of more than 500,000 members.
Amit Banka, Founder and CEO of WeNaturalists, said the programme aims to build long-term sustainability cultures on campuses and enable students to lead climate action initiatives with structured support and mentorship.
Participating campuses have already reported measurable outcomes. At a college in Mumbai, more than 100 students conducted a water audit that helped reduce water wastage by nearly 20 per cent. Students have also organised film screenings on plastic pollution and sustainable fishing, and conducted environmental education sessions for differently-abled groups in Indore.
WeNaturalists said the long-term goal is to establish a recognised credential for student-led environmental work while strengthening links between campus initiatives and climate action efforts.
