At CHIREC, sustainability is not just restricted to a one-time effort or a grand vision. We believe that meaningful impact is envisioned and implemented through simple everyday actions. Positive change is brought about through commitment, collaboration and a shared culture of accountability. Small positive actions from each member of our community, blossom into something meaningful.
Amid Hyderabad’s fast-growing urban environment, CHIREC found itself facing an alarming trend: rapidly rising energy consumption. As a school committed to sustainability, a small group of teachers and students found themselves mulling over a question: How can we rewrite this story to reduce our carbon footprint……?
That question gave birth to an idea: Launching a school-wide Energy Conservation Campaign with a goal to reduce energy consumption by 5 percent over the next five months. It was an ambitious goal, but one that was backed by dedication and enthusiasm. This goal was the first spark that rapidly grew into a movement.
The Eco-Warriors
The first sign of something extraordinary was reflected in the student participation. Nearly 300 children from grades 1 through 12 participated as ‘Eco-Warriors’. Four Sustainability Action Teams introduced new AC protocols, tracked energy use, and shared updates through assemblies, newsletters, and student-led activities. They conducted energy audits of classrooms and buildings, presented their findings, and suggested changes, making sustainability hands-on and student driven.
Their enthusiasm was infectious. Soon, teachers were also deeply involved. Parents began receiving weekly energy trackers, and many shared children are now actively monitoring the usage of electricity at home.
Small Actions, Big Impact
Unlike many programmes that focus on awareness, this campaign was rooted in measurable action. Monthly electricity readings became a benchmark to measure progress, and it demonstrated to all the participants that their sincere efforts were truly making a difference. Students monitored energy use and adhered to simple daily habits like switching off fans and lights before leaving a room. They began to understand that sustainability need not be a complex solution – it starts with small steady actions that multiply with community participation. Staff members adjusted their routines and chose to sit together during non-teaching hours to reduce the need for extra cooling. Parents also joined in, becoming active partners in this initiative.

The results quickly became visible. The target was surpassed, with average energy consumption dropping by 10.5 percent in just five months. By August 2025, CHIREC saved 61,198 kWh of electricity, equivalent to approximately 58,250 kg of CO₂.
The most remarkable part?
This entire achievement required no new infrastructure. Every improvement was achieved solely through behaviour change and improved SOPs.
A Campaign becomes a Movement
“I switched off the fans and lights of the classroom after we left for any outdoor activity and encouraged my classmates to open the windows instead of the ACs,” said a student Kashvi.
It was a just a simple sentence, but it captured something intense and powerful. It was the echo of hundreds of similar actions taking place across campus every day.
Students encouraged their peers, teachers adopted new routines, support staff collaborated with each other, and parents reinforced these habits at home turning it into a community movement.
Massive community participation was recorded. 2,581 students, 271 teachers, 79 staff and 4388 students were involved in this mission.
The school didn’t need to enforce sustainability – people chose it.
This is the story of CHIREC’s energy campaign.
A story of committed students, dedicated teachers and supportive families who proved that sustainability can be implemented through simple everyday choices.
A story of how students learnt what it means to be responsible citizens, thoughtful leaders, and drivers of real-world change – skills that will last far beyond the classroom.
Our journey towards sustainability keeps growing. Following the incredible success of the energy campaign, CHIREC has now launched the water conservation challenge. Everyone in the community is pitching in proving that small, everyday choices can create a big impact.
