In a major boost to data-driven road safety governance, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has developed an Integrated Road Safety Dashboard to help States and Union Territories improve road safety outcomes through coordinated policymaking.
Developed by RBG Labs, IIT Madras, the digital platform integrates data from multiple departments and provides real-time analytics and actionable insights to identify accident hotspots, assign responsibilities, track interventions, and measure impact. Designed as a scalable and replicable digital public infrastructure, the dashboard aligns with national frameworks while allowing States flexibility to customise workflows and indicators.
The Government of Odisha has become the first State to adopt the platform, launching it during Road Safety Month 2026. Odisha customised the modular dashboard to suit its governance structure while adhering to national standards.
Transport Commissioner of Odisha, Amitabh Thakur, said the dashboard strengthens enforcement and intervention strategies by enabling a data-driven, human factors–based approach to road safety.
Highlighting its significance, Prof. V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, said the platform demonstrates how academic research and technology can support evidence-based governance and inter-departmental coordination. Prof. Venkatesh Balasubramanian, Head of RBG Labs, described it as a “governance reform tool” where technology directly contributes to saving lives.
Built on data from the national eDAR (electronic Detailed Accident Report) system of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the dashboard shifts governance from a “data-only” model to a “Data + Action” approach.
With features such as an Officials’ Portal for monitoring and analytics and a Citizen Portal for public reporting of accidents and hazards, the platform is expected to play a key role in strengthening India’s road safety efforts as it scales nationwide.
