CHIREC International School believes that true learning takes place when students feel safe, supported and valued not only academically but also emotionally and socially. The school holds that a happy child is a successful learner and has therefore made student well-being a central pillar of its educational vision for many years. It defines well-being as a sense of contentment in which individuals thrive socially, emotionally and physically. At CHIREC, care is more than a philosophy; it is a lived experience. The school introduces initiatives in a planned and structured manner to support the emotional and physical well-being of its community. The Gift of Sleep campaign is a clear example of the application of this philosophy.
A heartfelt message from a concerned parent to the CHIREC leadership team catalysed the Gift of Sleep campaign. The parent initially believed her child’s condition was caused by anxiety but later realised that he was experiencing fatigue due to a lack of sleep. Her emotional message reflected a challenge many families were quietly facing: busy schedules, examinations, schoolwork, extracurricular activities and increasing screen time were gradually reducing the essential rest needed by families. Her note was not merely the story of one child but represented the unspoken concerns of the wider school community. Exhaustion was affecting well-being, holistic development and learning. Driven by empathy and compassion, CHIREC decided to act, and thus the seeds of the Gift of Sleep campaign were sown.
Prioritising Physical Well-Being
One of the most crucial elements that fosters well-being, yet is often overlooked, is sleep. To address this issue, CHIREC launched the Gift of Sleep campaign, which actively involved both students and parents in building healthier sleep habits. The campaign began by gathering insights into the sleep patterns of the school community. A feedback form was shared with all families from pre-primary to Grade 12. Parents of pre-primary students completed the form, while students in higher grades participated alongside their parents. Data analysis revealed that the sleep habits of many members of the CHIREC community were below global benchmarks, and this information was shared with students and parents.
To deepen understanding, the school organised webinars with reputed sleep specialists to raise awareness among parents about the importance of adequate rest. In the third phase of the campaign, a sleep calendar and tracker were distributed to families, who were encouraged to monitor and improve their sleep habits. The campaign concluded with a follow-up survey that recorded improvements in the sleep patterns of participants. This initiative demonstrates how well-being at CHIREC is approached in an organised and methodical manner.
Teachers were also actively involved in the campaign, recognising that their well-being influences the learning environment. All teachers were provided with sleep trackers and monitored their sleep patterns regularly. Based on the data collected, many teachers became aware of unhealthy habits and made lifestyle changes, resulting in increased energy levels and a more positive outlook. This contributed to a more encouraging classroom environment. Their commitment to adopting healthier habits made them role models for students and other members of the school community. By sharing their experiences, teachers inspired students to adopt positive lifestyle changes, thereby reinforcing the message of the campaign.
The transformative impact of the campaign was evident in the lives of students and families. For example, Ananya, a pre-primary student, had an irregular routine that often left her irritable at school. Through the Gift of Sleep campaign webinar, her parents became aware of the importance of a consistent sleep routine for young children. They began using the sleep calendar and tracker to monitor her sleep patterns and established a bedtime ritual in which her father read stories and her mother sang lullabies. This routine helped ensure she went to bed on time. As a result, she became more cheerful and attentive in class, and her interactions with classmates improved.
Similarly, Roshan, a Grade 8 student, frequently stayed up late watching television or browsing the internet. When the campaign began, his family realised that their sleep habits were irregular. They decided to approach the campaign as a family health challenge. Each family member used the sleep tracker, and they agreed to follow a “no devices after 9 p.m.” rule. This initiative encouraged the family to adopt healthier sleep practices. Roshan’s sleep patterns improved, and he became more energetic and refreshed, which positively affected his academic performance. His parents later shared that adopting these positive habits brought a new sense of peace to their home.
The Gift of Sleep campaign highlights that well-being is not built through grand gestures but through small, consistent daily habits. By embracing healthier routines, families created more harmonious home environments, students became more energised, and teachers emerged as agents of positive change. Through such initiatives, CHIREC remains committed to promoting community well-being as a central goal of its educational approach.
