The Department of Information Technology at Vivekanand Education Society’s Institute of Technology (VESIT) organised its first two-day offline hackathon, ‘Genesis 2026’, in Mumbai on 17 February 2026.
The event was held in collaboration with the Solid Waste Management Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation under Project Swechchha, enabling students to work on civic problem statements related to urban waste management. The hackathon focused on the theme “Building Intelligent, Sustainable, and Decentralised Solutions for the Future” and brought together participants from multiple departments and academic years.
Around 552 entries were recorded. The programme was conducted under the Internal Quality Assurance Cell in association with the Institution’s Innovation Council through the QuestIT platform. Dedicated tracks on sustainability, artificial intelligence and blockchain encouraged the development of deployable solutions for civic and environmental challenges. The blockchain track included crypto-based USDC rewards.
The event was held under the leadership of Principal Dr Jayalakshmi Nair and guided by Head of the Department of Information Technology Shri Manoj Sabnis. Coordination was led by Mrs Charusheela Nehete and Mrs Kajal Jewani, with support from faculty mentors and student volunteers. Chief guest Mrs Vidya M. Swami addressed participants, and sponsorship was provided by Star Union Dai-ichi Life Insurance Co..
The competition featured three tracks: sustainability, artificial intelligence and blockchain. The sustainability and artificial intelligence tracks each carried a prize pool of ₹25,000, while four winners in the blockchain track received 100 USDC each.
Organisers said the hackathon aimed to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, practical learning and engagement with real-world challenges. The event concluded with presentations showcasing student solutions addressing urban and technological issues.
